Math - Mrs. Goedge
This year we were given new math standards to teach to all students. These new standards are referred to as the "Common Core Standards" or CCS. Please take a look at these standards to be familiar with what your 5th grader will be responsible for learning in math this year at:
http://www.corestandards.org/the-standards/mathematics
We've finished division and are ready to learn about FRACTIONS. Throughout this unit, we will review basic fraction concepts, like equivalent fractions, ordering fractions, and simplifying fractions. After that, we will learn to add, subtract, mulitiply and divide fractions. This is a long unit and it can be challenging for students. Please help support your child by reviewing homework and quizzes with them! See the weekly agendas for more information. Remember, there is a Math 4 Today Quiz every Friday! This counts for 20% of your math grade!
The entire Math textbook is available online for your convenience. Visit www.pearsonsuccessnet.com. Username: ojibwa2011 Password: student

Science - Mrs. Goedge
We have begun to dissect the details of the human body! This massive unit will take us through the new year. We will study a new body system each week and then take a quiz over that system. Students will conduct their first INVESTIGATION Projects throughout this unit so please look for information about the project coming home soon. At the end of the unit, there will be a test over all the systems. Please see the agendas for further details.

Social Studies - Mrs. Reeves
5th graders have the opportunity this year to learn about the history or our nation. The timeline of our year will start with the lives of early Native Americans and will end with the adoption of our Constitution. We will be moving on in history to our early colonization unit. We will focus on how and why the Spanish, French, and English colonies developed in the Americas. Looking at each nations' motivations for coming to the New World we will see how they interacted with the environment and the people in the Americas. Additionally students will be introduced to the economics of the new colonies and why certain industries developed in specific areas of land.
Language Arts - Mrs. Reeves
This year we were given new Language Arts standards to teach to all students. These new standards are referred to as the "Common Core Standards" or CCS. Please take a look at these standards to be familiar with what your 5th grader will be responsible for learning in reading and writing this year at:

Writing - Ojibwa Elementary utilizes a writing program called "Being a Writer". We will be using this program to guide us through writing narrative and information texts this year. If you would like more information on this highly effective program please visit their website at: http://www.devstu.org/being-a-writer. We are nearing the end of our second unit in the Being a Writer program, the writing process.
We are nearing the end of our third unit in the Being a Writer program, persuasive nonfiction. In this unit, students were asked to form an opinion on a topic they felt strongly about. Our class utilized graphic organizers and information from the Internet to create their essays. Each student has written the essay with the goal of persuading the reader to agree with their opinion. Students will be sharing their persuasive essays during author’s chair. Beginning in February, we will explore writing expository (informational) nonfiction. We will begin by reading informational text about nature and natural disasters. During week three, students will pick a topic to write about and begin their research. They will refine their skills of organizing information and using strong sentences. You can help your child throughout this unit by reading informational text such National Geographic magazines or your at home newspaper.
Reading - It’s a mystery! Our next unit in reading will be mystery and the kids have already gotten a taste of this by using clues to guess our mystery book. In this genre, we will be reading Edgar Allen’s Official Crime Investigation Notebook, a story based on a fifth grade classroom where items keep disappearing. The main themes we'll be focusing on during the book are poetry, friendship, and using logic. This is a book that we have class sets of so your child should be coming home with this book each night to review and reread. We will generally have a comprehension review every 5 chapters, and will have a test and the AR test at the end of the story. In addition, the students will complete activities throughout the book based on the themes listed above and other story elements.
Working with words (Spelling and Vocabulary) - To help our 5th graders develop into more advanced readers and writers we are integrating our spelling and vocabulary programs. The main expectation for this is to have students work with words, their spellings, meanings, and various usages within their daily writing. To allow students the time to truly get to know and understand their words, we will be giving a new list each month, not each week. This word list will be a combination of the most commonly misspelled words, new vocabulary words, words from our novels, and words from our other content area subjects. These will be approximately 20 words on each list. At the end of the month there will be a quiz on the spelling, meaning, and proper usage of the words.

Daily 5 - During our daily reading block, we will be using the Daily 5 model for students to develop their reading and writing skills in multiple settings. To accomodate for the unique needs of a 5th grade classroom, we will be modifying the Daily 5 model to a Daily 3 model. Within the Daily 3, students will have the opportunity to choose from reading to themselves, reading to a partner, listening to reading, or working with words. During this time Mrs. Goedge and I will be working one on one with a student or with small groups to enhance reading comprehension. The Daily 3 program is designed to help students gain independence and choice to suit their reading needs. We are very excited to begin using this model for reading instruction and expect that the students will benefit greatly from it as well!
